The Common is anchored by the First Parish Meetinghouse, a white clapboard church that's been a fixture of the village since the early 19th century, the kind of classic New England church that shows up on Christmas cards and in your imagination when someone says \"small town Massachusetts.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eThe surrounding village is exactly what you picture when you think of coastal New England: a harbor within walking distance, independent shops and restaurants, old Colonial and Victorian homes, and a pace of life that feels genuinely different from the city. It began in 1835 as a Methodist revival camp, with attendees first sleeping in tents, then gradually replacing them with the ornate wooden cottages that stand today. Over 300 of these gingerbread-style Victorian cottages remain, each painted in bright, distinctive colors with elaborate carved trim and tiny front porches barely big enough for two chairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eAt the center of the campground stands the Trinity Park Tabernacle, an open-air wrought iron structure built in 1879 that still hosts community events every summer. The neighborhood is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most photographed spots on Martha's Vineyard. When the park was demolished, a local preservation effort saved the carousel from being lost forever. Hull residents rallied, raised funds, and fought to keep it in the community where it had brought joy for generations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eToday it operates out of a dedicated pavilion in Hull, open seasonally and free to visit, with rides running for just a dollar.
