Scituate Lighthouse has stood watch over Scituate Harbor since September 1811. Captain Simeon Bates was the first lighthouse keeper, living in the attached keeper's house with his wife and nine children. The lighthouse is most famous for the heroic actions of his daughters, Rebecca (21) and Abigail (15), who became known as the \"Army of Two\" during the War of 1812.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn September 1, 1814, when British forces approached to raid the harbor, the sisters grabbed a fife and drum and played military marching tunes from behind sand dunes. The British, thinking they were about to encounter militia troops, retreated to their ship.
