My daughter could ride this carousel every single day. And in the summer, we're here at least twice a week.
The Paragon Carousel in Hull is one of our family's favorite spots on the South Shore, the kind of place that feels frozen in time in the best possible way. While I have also always loved carousels, I've found that rides that continuously go in a circle no longer work for me. Therefore, my daughter and and my husband ride, while I stay safely on solid ground and capture the memories.
I've never been able to replicate the light that came through this day, even though I've tried. That's what makes this shot particularly special. It looks more like a painting than a photo with its rich color and light. I call it "Carousel Lights", and it's one of my favorite non-coastal shots I've taken on the South Shore.
About the Paragon Carousel
The Paragon Carousel is one of the oldest operating carousels in the United States, built in 1928 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and originally part of Paragon Park, a beloved amusement park that operated in Hull, Massachusetts from 1905 until it closed in 1984. When the park was demolished, a local preservation effort saved the carousel from being lost forever. Hull residents rallied, raised funds, and fought to keep it in the community where it had brought joy for generations.
Today it operates out of a dedicated pavilion in Hull, open seasonally and free to visit, with rides running for just a dollar. The carousel is a National Historic Landmark and one of only a handful of its kind still operating anywhere in the country. All 66 original hand-carved horses remain, along with the original Wurlitzer band organ that's been playing music since 1928.
If you grew up on the South Shore, you almost certainly have a memory involving this carousel. And if you haven't been yet, it's worth the trip.
PERFECT FOR:

Hull residents and South Shore locals

- Lovers of historic carousels

STYLING & DISPLAY IDEAS:
- Choosing Your Frame A simple black frame looks clean and modern. Natural wood feels warm and coastal. White keeps it light and airy. Whatever you pick, stick to one frame style across a gallery wall so it looks intentional. All prints include a 1/2" white border for framing flexibility.
-
What Size Goes Where
- 5x7: desk, shelf, nightstand, or part of a gallery wall.
- 8x10: standalone in a bathroom, bedroom, or hallway.
- 11x14: statement piece above a sofa, bed, or dresser. When in doubt, go one size up. Prints almost always look better slightly larger than you expect.
- Building a Gallery Wall Odd numbers work best (3, 5, or 7 prints). Mix sizes for visual interest with a larger print as the anchor. Keep frames consistent. Lay it out on the floor before hanging anything. Renters: Command strips hold framed prints up to 8x10 without damaging walls.
- Where These Prints Live Living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, bathrooms, hallways, beach houses, and rental properties. Coastal photography works in more spaces than you'd think — especially when the colors are warm rather than dark and moody.
- Gifting These make great housewarming gifts, holiday presents, and hostess gifts for anyone who loves New England. Ships unframed and ready to wrap.
