Scituate Lighthouse is one of the South Shore’s most beloved landmarks and this fine art photography print captures its coastal essence. This historic lighthouse was built in 1811 and is most famous for the “Army of Two” story. Sisters Rebecca and Abigail Bates spotted enemy British forces one evening and were able to trick them into retreating by using a fife and drum during the War of 1812. I captured this image during an afternoon walk with my family, and the warm tones combined with the American flag perfectly embody quintessential coastal New England.

The lighthouse was the 11th lighthouse built in the United States and is the 5th oldest in New England. I’m a common visitor at the Scituate Lighthouse as I love to capture it throughout all different times of the day and in the different seasons (including in the snow at sunset!). This particular shot is a favorite of mine as it stands out for its warm tones and American flag.

The light that day was bright, highlighting the beauty of the 1811 building. The American flag is a perfect addition due to the lighthouse’s history in protecting the newly formed country. The Scituate Lighthouse represents everything we love about coastal Massachusetts.

Whether you're from Scituate, Cohasset (like me!), or the South Shore, or maybe you’re a lighthouse enthusiast or New England lover, this print brings that coastal feeling into your home.

What’s the “Army of Two” story? Scituate Lighthouse has stood watch over Scituate Harbor since September 1811. Captain Simeon Bates was the first lighthouse keeper, living in the attached keeper's house with his wife and nine children. The lighthouse is most famous for the heroic actions of his daughters, Rebecca (21) and Abigail (15), who became known as the "Army of Two" during the War of 1812.

On September 1, 1814, when British forces approached to raid the harbor, the sisters grabbed a fife and drum and played military marching tunes from behind sand dunes. The British, thinking they were about to encounter militia troops, retreated to their ship. This act of quick thinking saved Scituate from attack and made the Bates sisters local legends.

The lighthouse was deactivated in 1860 when Minot's Ledge Light came into service, but was relit in 1994 as a private aid to navigation.

STYLING & DISPLAY IDEAS:

  • Choosing Your Frame A simple black frame looks clean and modern. Natural wood feels warm and coastal. White keeps it light and airy. Whatever you pick, stick to one frame style across a gallery wall so it looks intentional. All prints include a 1/2" white border for framing flexibility.
  • What Size Goes Where
    • 5x7: desk, shelf, nightstand, or part of a gallery wall.
    • 8x10: standalone in a bathroom, bedroom, or hallway.
    • 11x14: statement piece above a sofa, bed, or dresser. When in doubt, go one size up. Prints almost always look better slightly larger than you expect.
  • Building a Gallery Wall Odd numbers work best (3, 5, or 7 prints). Mix sizes for visual interest with a larger print as the anchor. Keep frames consistent. Lay it out on the floor before hanging anything. Renters: Command strips hold framed prints up to 8x10 without damaging walls.
  • Where These Prints Live Living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, bathrooms, hallways, beach houses, and rental properties. Coastal photography works in more spaces than you'd think — especially when the colors are warm rather than dark and moody.
  • Gifting These make great housewarming gifts, holiday presents, and hostess gifts for anyone who loves New England. Ships unframed and ready to wrap.
